Special Programs
PS 527 is fortunate to be able to offer several exciting programs for our 4th and 5th graders to participate in during their lunch and recess time.
Student Government
Each year students in 5th grade can apply to participate in our PS 527 Student Government. As members of the Student Government, students lead schoolwide social action projects, spearhead our Participatory Budget vote and learn about how to help our school thrive.
MORGAN BOOK PROJECT
Through our partnership with the Morgan Library, students in 5th grade can participate in the Morgan Book Project. Students meet weekly with our Art Teacher, Ms. Caroline, and our ENL teacher, Ms. Timothea, to learn about the process of medieval book making. Students learn to make their own paint and gold guild as they create their own manuscripts. Books are entered into a competition at the Morgan and the winning books are on display throughout the summer. A PS527 student has had this honor each year we have participated.
Civics for All
PS 527 is a proud Civics for All partner and engages in the Participatory Budget Vote each year. Our school is given a small grant and every member of the school has an opportunity to vote on how the money should be spent. Members of the Student Government research what is needed in the school, then they create and present proposals to the entire student body. Every person in the school casts a vote and the winning proposal is funded. Past projects include a school store and sensory tools for classrooms.
MATH OLYMPIADS
4th and 5th grade students looking for a challenge in Math can join Math Olympiads. During these sessions students work together on advanced problem solving before entering into monthly math competitions. The objective is to teach multiple strategies for out-of-the box problem-solving, as well as developing mathematical flexibility in solving these problems while fostering mathematical creativity and ingenuity.
Green Team
The PS527 Pandas focus on eliminating waste in our school. They conduct audits of single use plastics in the cafeteria during lunch periods from time to time. They organize and participate in neighborhood litter cleanups in which the whole school can participate in partnership with the Sanitation Foundation and City Council Member Julie Menin’s office.
BAND
Starting in 4th grade students have the opportunity to join Band, led by our Music Teacher, Mr. Tim. Students receive group lessons on their instrument and then practice as a whole band. Band concerts occur in the Winter and Spring.
