NINA UY

FIFTH GRADE TEACHER

Nina Uy was born, raised and educated in Queens and has dedicated her life to shaping young minds and inspiring them to strive for more. This precept is carried throughout her classroom and how Nina lives her own life. Nina is an adventurer, traveler and an avid dreamer. As a living and breathing testament to the power of a strong public school education, Nina has decided to show her gratitude by giving back to the community that has given her so much.

Nina studied and graduated from New York University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education and received a Master’s of Arts at Teachers College at Columbia University. She holds a dual-certification in elementary and special education K-6 with a concentration in English. Prior to coming to P.S. 527, Nina has invested her talent and energy into the young learners at P.S./I.S. 49 in Middle Village, Queens, a literacy based school with a special focus on art and music. Nina has been part of both 4th grade and 5th grade education teams as a special education teacher. Art, music, and social justice issues are the pillars of Nina’s educational beliefs and are weaved into her lessons. Nina has a strong belief that reading and writing are enhanced through creative arts is vital for all children’s development. The importance of play and living an active lifestyle are transparent when you meet Nina. At P.S./I.S. 49 she founded the Lightning Bolts, the school’s first running club in conjunction with the New York Road Runners Program. Nina has also received her Level I Teacher Training at Little Flower Yoga and integrates breathing practices and mindfulness activities in both running and her classroom. Nina’s classroom cultivates robust minds, critical thinkers and active imaginations. Her students are encouraged to be independent and confident in their own abilities. Her own penchant for writing and love for new discoveries is infused in her classroom and she encourages her students to take the same attitude in their own work. Thoughtful and mindful risk-taking as well as kindness is always championed in Nina’s room. After seven years of teaching, she received her certification in School Building Administration.

Having a passion for lifelong learning and seeking out a school that encourages social justice work, Nina has found herself at the doorsteps of P.S. 527. She is thrilled and blessed to be a founding fifth grade teacher and always looks forward to bringing her enthusiasm for teaching and learning to the P.S. 527 community. She hopes to continually promote positive student identities and inclusivity within the community. This upcoming school year is her 13th year of teaching. She is currently having fun learning the ropes of motherhood with August “Auggie” Lauro (almost 3-years old) and Amari (20 months). She’s pumped to start yet another year with her 527 family!
