YVONNE ACEVEDO

FIFTH GRADE TEACHER

Yvonne grew up in Queens New York, and received her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and African American Studies from Syracuse University. Yvonne first worked as a social worker for three years in Brooklyn and always loved working with children and their families. She decided to go back to school to become a teacher; she attended Hunter College and received her Master’s Degree in Childhood Education.

In 2004 after student teaching at the Talented and Gifted School for Young Scholars in East Harlem, Yvonne had the privilege of becoming a classroom teacher at TAG, and had the wonderful experience of teaching in both the elementary and middle school. Yvonne taught both second and third grade for six years, and sixth grade humanities for seven years. Yvonne was also a part of the departmentalized 5 th and 6th grade where she taught 5 separate classes of reading. While at TAG, Yvonne served as a new teacher mentor where she helped guide new teachers during their first year of teaching. She also had the privilege of being part of the Common Core Lab Team as she helped to roll out the Common Core Standards and co-wrote the ELA units for the elementary school. She was very fortunate to take part in many Professional Development workshops for both ELA and Math. Yvonne loved working at TAG with her wonderful families, fantastic students and brilliant colleagues. She continues to improve her teaching practices by participating in meaningful and relevant Professional Development and workshops.

Yvonne believes in creating a classroom environment that suits the diverse needs of her students, focusing on collaboration and community. She works hard at creating a classroom environment that encourages her students to feel secure and welcomed, allowing for them to share their individuality in a safe and caring environment.

Today Yvonne lives in Beacon, New York. She is a mom to two daughters; Jordan is 18 and in her second year of college, and Mikayla is 9 entering 5th grade. Yvonne is so excited to join the 527 community and looks forward to working with students and families.
